October 2024 marked an exciting milestone for the AIPHY program as research teams from across the 4EU+ Alliance gathered in Geneva to kick off this innovative initiative. 

AIPHY, recently awarded the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant from the European Union, is dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence methods for data analysis in the realm of particle physics. This interdisciplinary PhD network provides a unified structure for research-focused training, equipping future leaders in science and industry with critical and innovative thinking skills. 

As Prof. Tobias Golling (University of Geneva) explains, the program centers around three key pillars: 

• Inverse Problems - utilizingobservational data from detectors to unravel the mysteries of fundamental nature, 
• SystematicUncertainties - adapting the rigorousapproachesused in scientificresearch to improve machine learning, and 
• Explainable AI - ensuringtransparency in machine learning by comprehendingwhat the AI isactuallylearning.

The AIPHY project focuses on AI techniques to analyze complex datasets, particularly from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. By combining AI expertise and particle physics insights, AIPHY seeks to open new horizons in data interpretation and scientific discovery. 

Prof. Jürgen Hesser (University of Heidelberg) highlighted the vital role of the 4EU+ Alliance in securing this grant and supporting the development of collaborative research and educational initiatives.  

AIPHY is a thriving network spanning the University of Copenhagen, University of Geneva, University of Heidelberg, University of Milan and Sorbonne University. It is supported by the 4EU+ 1CORE framework, an initiative that fosters a multidimensional student-centered approach, while developing new joint digital infrastructures and services.
