The ERC ModERN project: Modelling Enlightenment (hosted at Sorbonne University) and the Voltaire Foundation (University of Oxford), in collaboration with the DataLab of the French National Library (BnF), invite applications for a two-day hackathon themed “Voltaire and the Press”.
Event Overview:
This collaborative event aims to bring together participants from varied backgrounds, including sudents, engineers, developers and 18th-century scholars to collectively explore the digitized collection of 18th-century French press provided by the ModERN project and the BnF DataLab. Under the guidance of digital humanities experts, participants will work in teams to extract information about Voltaire, his works, and his role as a prominent Enlightenment figure within the cultural landscape of the time.
Questions to Explore:
Was Voltaire explicitly named and cited in the press of that era? What types of discourse developed around him? Are there areas where his authority and prestige were especially recognised? To answer these and other stimulating questions as part of the Hackathon, a wide range of topics and digital methods can be explored, including various text mining techniques, data extraction and visualization, stylometric experiments, quotation and reuse extraction, sentiment analysis, topic modeling, etc. All new literary, technical, and analytical hypotheses are welcome!
Collaborative Project Presentations:
Projects developed will be presented on the second day of the Hackathon and evaluated by the team from the ModERN project and the Voltaire Foundation. Three prizes will be awarded: the Enlightenment Prize for the project with the most robust techniques and results; the Digital Innovation Prize celebrating the most original approach that could lead to new treatments of other corpora; and the Philology Prize honoring the project most attentive to data and its scientific value, offering new research perspectives around Voltaire and his centrality to the 18th century.

Le projet ERC ModERN: Modelling Enlightenment (hébergé à Sorbonne Université) et la Voltaire Foundation (Oxford University), en collaboration avec le DataLab de la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) vous invitent à soumettre une candidature pour un hackathon de deux jours sur le thème de « Voltaire et la presse ».
Cet événement collaboratif vise à réunir les participants, informaticiens et spécialistes de la littérature du XVIIIe siècle, dans une exploration collective de plusieurs collections numérisées de presse française du XVIIIe siècle, mise à disposition par le projet ModERN et le DataLab de la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). Sous la direction de spécialistes des humanités numériques, les participants devront collaborer afin d’extraire des informations autour de la figure de Voltaire, de ses oeuvres, de son rôle en tant que figure éminente des Lumières à l’intérieur du panorama culturel de l’époque.
Est-ce que Voltaire est explicitement nommé et cité dans la presse de l’époque ? Quels types de discours se sont développés autour de lui ? Est-ce qu’il y a des domaines dans lesquels son autorité et son prestige sont plus pris en compte ? Pour répondre à celles-ci ou à bien d’autres questions que ce Hackathon pourra stimuler, un large éventail de thématiques et de méthodes numériques pourra être exploré, notamment différentes techniques de fouille de textes, d’extraction et de visualisation des données textuelles, d’expériences stylométriques, d’extraction des citations ou des réemplois, d’analyse de sentiment, topic-modeling, etc. Toute nouvelle hypothèse littéraire et analytique est la bienvenue !
Les projets collaboratifs développés seront présentés lors de la deuxième journée du Hackathon, et évalués par l’équipe du projet ModERN et de la Voltaire Foundation. Trois prix seront décernés : le prix Lumières, qui récompensera le projet dont les techniques employées et les résultats s’avèrent les plus solides ; le prix Innovation numérique, qui célébrera l’approche la plus originale et qui pourrait ouvrir à des nouveaux traitements du corpus ; et le prix Philologie, qui honorera le projet qui sera jugé le plus attentif aux données et à leur valeur scientifique, proposant de nouvelles perspectives de recherche autour de Voltaire et sa centralité au
XVIIIe siècle.
