This school highlights advanced techniques of machine learning and their application in high energy physics. The topics include 'Likelihood & Uncertainties', 'Generative Networks', 'Physics Informed Neural Networks' and other specialised subjects. In addition, participants will gain hands-on experience in the accompanying exercise sessions.

Welcome to the 'Learning at the Frontier' advanced school on machine learning in particle physics. During the course, you will learn about advanced machine learning techniques and how they are applied in particle physics. You will also gain hands-on experience by applying these techniques in accompanying exercise sessions.

The school is aimed at PhD students in particle physics and computer science who wish to develop their knowledge of advanced machine learning approaches and ways of thinking. Advanced Master's students with relevant backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.

The school is organised by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network AIPHY, and is open to all.

The school takes place at the Institut Pascal of Université Paris-Saclay in Orsay. Accommodation is organised at La Clarté Dieu. The number of students is limited and students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis provided they fulfil the requirements and submit a well-motivated registration.

Lectures will be run by a diverse group of renowned physicists and computer scientists, including the researchers Jesse Thaler (MIT), Sofia Palacios Schweitzer (Rutgers University), Tilman Plehn (University of Heidelberg) and Troels Petersen (NBI Copenhagen), who along with experts on specialised subjects will lecture on topics such as:

  • Likelihood & Uncertainties
  • Generative Networks
  • Physics Informed Neural Networks

Registration is free of charge for Ph.D. students of the AIPHY network. For students outside the network there is a registration fee of 400 Euro covering tuition, accommodation, catering during the course, and social events. Students must arrange for travel themselves.
