Data Commons and Artificial Intelligence: Cross Perspectives between France and Quebec

The objective of this study day is to share French and Quebecois expertise on the valorization of cultural data for the development of artificial intelligence systems. By bringing together institutions from the GLAM sector (galleries, libraries, archives, museums, and cultural heritage institutions) and actors from the open knowledge movement (notably the Wikimedia movement), the event aims to foster synergies between public institutions and digital commons stakeholders in order to address shared challenges related to data accessibility, governance, and equity.

The avenues for reflection and action explored as part of this initiative include:

  • adapting legislative frameworks to the realities of the public domain and the commons,
  • developing platforms for providing access to cultural data sets,
  • designing sustainable and equitable economic models,
  • promoting cultural and linguistic diversity within the Franco–Quebec ecosystem.

This study day is part of the project Digital Commons and Artificial Intelligence, funded by the Permanent Commission for Franco–Quebec Cooperation (CPCFQ). The project is co-led by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) and the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS, Montréal).

This project is conducted in collaboration with:

Quebec, Canada: Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur les humanités numériques (CRIHN), Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), Wikimédia Canada, Québec’s Ministry of Culture and Communications (MCCQ), University of Ottawa.
France: DICEN-IDF Laboratory (Université Paris Nanterre), Wikimédia France, Théâtres & Médiations Numériques Laboratory (TMNLab), Delegation for the French Language and the Languages of France (DGLFLF) of the Ministry of Culture.

With the support of the Cultural and Cooperation Service of the Consulate General of France in Quebec City.
