Creating space for the environment in AI agency debates

Abstract: We interact with AI systems in various kinds of environments, a factor that is often overlooked in current debates on the potential agency of AI systems. In my talk, I argue that this can explain why we are more willing to attribute agency to AI systems in certain contexts than in others. I explore what a shift in our attention to the environment itself can teach us about our willingness to attribute agency to AI systems and how it affects the perception of our own agency in relation to theirs.
