HANDS is a unique opportunity for humanities and social sciences doctoral students to gain cutting-edge digital skills — from Python programming to AI and large language models — directly applicable to their research."

As part of the REAL@SU program (2026-2027), the HANDS project – Digital Humanities for Doctoral Studies at Sorbonne Université – aims to address the growing deficit in digital skills within doctoral training in the humanities and social sciences. Led by the ObTIC team, it offers a transversal and interdisciplinary curriculum in digital humanities, structured around two intensive summer schools and personalized support throughout the year. Data analysis, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and programming are covered in an applied manner, drawing on the corpora and research questions specific to each doctoral student. The goal is to equip early-career researchers with methodological tools that can be immediately put to use in their work, while broadening their academic and professional horizons.

Skills Developed:

  • Understanding the fundamentals of AI, NLP, and Digital Humanities.
  • Using Python for data analysis.
  • Working with LLMs to address a variety of tasks.
  • Using RAG models for the analysis of geopolitical documents.
  • Collaborative teamwork on an applied project (data collection, analysis, and presentation).
  • Clear and concise oral communication around a data science project.
