3 Days of Total Immersion in Medical AI: High Praise for the 3rd 4EU+ Workshop in Paris

From June 24th to 26th, 2026, SCAI became a hub for healthcare innovation. In partnership with Heidelberg University, this third edition of the 4EU+ European University Alliance workshop tackled one of today's most pioneering topics: Generative and Foundation Models in Medicine.

Bringing together 40 hand-picked PhD students from the fields of medicine, biology, and computer science, this immersive three-day event delivered on all its promises. Between high-level scientific lectures, intensive hands-on programming sessions, and multicultural networking, here is a look back at the highlights of this outstanding edition.

A Franco-German Synergy Shaping the Future of Healthcare

Jointly organized by SCAI (Sorbonne University) and the MIISM (Mannheim Institute for Intelligent Systems in Medicine, Heidelberg University), with the financial backing of the Franco-German University (UFA), the event provided a unique collaborative ecosystem for young researchers from across Europe.

The core ambition? Breaking down disciplinary and geographical silos to explore how artificial intelligence can truly revolutionize diagnosis, patient care, and clinical workflows.

Scientific Highlights: From "Black Swans" to Explainable AI

The program featured a stellar lineup of international researchers who shared their latest breakthroughs and challenged existing paradigms:

  • Causal Inference & Generalization: Erwan Scornet opened the workshop by examining how treatment effects from randomized controlled trials transfer to real-world target populations, demonstrating why the "risk difference" measure stands out in terms of generalizability.

  • Fighting Sepsis in the ICU: Verena Schneider-Lindner (MIISM) addressed one of the leading causes of mortality in intensive care. She critically reviewed current ML-based predictive models, highlighting the impact of missing data and the necessity of valid outcome definitions in high-stakes emergency settings.

  • The Foundation Model Shift: Clément Rambour deciphered the massive transition from classic supervised learning to in-context learning. This new paradigm allows deep models to adapt to medical image segmentation and time-series forecasting at inference time from just a few examples, without costly retraining.

  • Black Swans & Red Herrings in Digital Pathology: Cleo Weis captivated the audience by analyzing rare, high-impact diagnoses (Black Swans) and deceptive malignant mimics (Red Herrings). She demonstrated how Few-Shot Learning, Anomaly Detection, and Knowledge Graphs are helping pathologists locate these "needles in a haystack" within massive whole-slide images.

  • Hybrid and Explainable AI: Isabelle Bloch closed the lecture series by advocating for a hybrid AI approach in medical imaging. She emphasized that combining raw data-driven power (deep learning) with structured human knowledge and spatial reasoning is key to making AI dependable and understandable for clinicians.

From Theory to Practice: Code on the Frontline

One of the workshop’s greatest strengths was its emphasis on Hands-on Sessions. PhD candidates got their hands dirty with code, directly implementing generative architectures, testing algorithmic robustness, and bridging the gap between mathematical theory and biological reality.

These collaborative workshops also featured short pitches and poster sessions where the doctoral students showcased their own ongoing thesis research, sparking vibrant academic debates.

Building an Authentic European Research Community

Because top-tier European research is built on human connections, the evenings were dedicated to cultural discovery and informal networking. Participants experienced authentic Parisian culture with a lively "Apéro Pétanque" at the historic Arènes de Lutèce, before taking in the city's iconic landmarks during a scenic Paris Boat Tour dinner on the Seine.

The resounding success of this event cements the leading role of Sorbonne University and Heidelberg University within the 4EU+ Alliance, driving forward a unified, world-class European community in AI-driven healthcare.
